![]() ![]() While there are weather issues at play in the summer (afternoon thunderstorms in the Midwest), there are also more flights as it is a busier travel season. This counter-intuitive timing is supported by data on the causes of flight delays. The best time of year is September through November. July and August generally have the highest percentage of delays, with June close behind. When are there the most delays?ĭespite conventional wisdom, winter is not the worst time of the year for delays. This month we explore data on the timing, causes and locations of flight delays at major airports, and provide insight on how to best deal with them. As we’re in the dead of winter, many travellers assume that flight delays will get worse due to winter weather conditions - but this is not necessarily the case. ![]() Industry revenue of “scheduled air transportation“ in the U.S.Flight delays are one of the more stressful and frustrating parts of the travel experience.Industry revenue of “scheduled air transportation“ in New Jersey 2012-2024.Performance of mobile passenger services in airports worldwide as of November 2014.Number of passengers carried by Iraqi Airways - by sector 2011-2015.Air traffic growth - route & travel class 2014/2015.International air passenger traffic by South Korean low cost carriers 2015-2021.Calgary International Airport's air traffic - airlines by departing seats 2016.Leading airlines in Russia 2021, by passenger count.Number of German travellers who used a charter airline 2014-2018. ![]() Air travel - percentage of economy-class bookings in Europe 2011.Most annoying types of airline passengers worldwide as of September 2014.Air travel market share by destination country 2016.Share of passengers of Norwegian Air Shuttle 2016, by country.Air passengers annual growth rate in China 2014-2020.Net profit per passenger transported by airlines worldwide 2005-2022.Scheduled flights at Dubai International Airport 2013-2021ĭominican Republic: number of air passenger departures 2010-2020, by typeĪir France KLM: flights on time and delayed in United Kingdom airports 2011-Q1 2015 Industry revenue of “scheduled air transportation“ in the U.S. Industry revenue of “scheduled air transportation“ in New Jersey 2012-2024 Performance of mobile passenger services in airports worldwide as of November 2014 Number of passengers carried by Iraqi Airways - by sector 2011-2015 International air passenger traffic by South Korean low cost carriers 2015-2021Īir traffic growth - route & travel class 2014/2015 Leading airlines in Russia 2021, by passenger countĬalgary International Airport's air traffic - airlines by departing seats 2016 Number of German travellers who used a charter airline 2014-2018 Most annoying types of airline passengers worldwide as of September 2014Īir travel - percentage of economy-class bookings in Europe 2011 Share of passengers of Norwegian Air Shuttle 2016, by countryĪir travel market share by destination country 2016 Net profit per passenger transported by airlines worldwide 2005-2022Īir passengers annual growth rate in China 2014-2020 Finally, there is also the growth in airport infrastructure spending, led by the Asia Pacific region, which has increased the global carrying capacity. Both these developments have increased the number of consumers able to afford air travel. Second is the growth of the global middle class, especially in China. First is the increase in low-cost carriers, who have almost doubled their market share over the last 15 years. Three main reasons are generally cited to explain the ongoing global growth in air travel. The region also includes the busiest air routes. In 2019, the Asia Pacific region had the highest share of airline passenger traffic accounting for one third of the global total. Excluded are passengers on charter flights, whereby an entire plane is booked by a private group. Scheduled passengers refer to the number of passengers who have booked a flight with a commercial airline. The number of scheduled passengers handled by the global airline industry has increased in all but one of the last decade. This represents a 50 percent loss in global air passenger traffic compared to 2019. In 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the estimated number of scheduled passengers boarded by the global airline industry amounted to just over 2.2 billion people. ![]()
